With wrestling with your chuck: Make a cradle out of wood that sits in the ways and has a semicircular cutout on top that just nestles the chuck when the cradle is solidly in the ways underneath the chuck.

Planting on the backside of the mogul is a myth.
If your waiting that long to plant your pole then you're late and are riding the backseat. Of course on a flat course it's possible but on a steep course like Deer Valley, your LATE.

We recently got a used, but very nice Buck Chuck 6-jaw scroll chuck.
Not sure of the age, but is measures 9" across the face.
Great shape, not used much. Only problem is that it did not have any jaws on it. The mounting screws are there, but no jaws.
