Are there any particularly good university lectures available online for download as mp3 (or some other audio format)? I am particularly interested in hearing some of the more advanced classes that I didn't get to take in my engineering degree, like compilers...

There aren't too many in-depth CS lectures....
If you pick a class from the unfiltered list of all U, which is a collection of free audio and video lectures that academic institutions post.
UC Berkeley offers audio versions of lectures.

The Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programming lectures by Hal Abelson and Gerald Jay Sussman.
The SICP lectures are my favourite.
Interesting and well-done.

They provide lecture notes, lab assignments, and all course materials used in the class....
While not a video, MIT's OpenCourseWare class, Computation Structures is the equivalent to my Computer Architecture class at the university.

You could check
University of Massachusetts has a course called Compiler Techniques which has both video lectures Optimisation which has video lectures....
Check out the "Computer Language Engineering" class in MIT's OpenCourseWare.

But I think it was an excellent introductory class, covering the huge potential of computer.
A student at Worcester Polytechnic Institute(an hour west of MIT) and I took a class that very similar responses.

Why waste time with a useless class if it won't with the people that skip....
From that perspective, skipping some lectures makes sense.
I feel bad when I don't go, even if most of my lectures.
class I've missed all term though.
