You might try TransOther , which makes all windows but the active one transparent. .
Windows-D, and then alt-tab or click only the application that you want .

Just upgraded to lion from Snow Leopard.
I had a ton of folders and files on my desktop, and the install cleaned them up. I can still see them all in Finder no problem, and this is nice as it's cleaned up my cluttered mess.
