In the end, having tried everything else I could think of, I restarted the machine (2008 MacBook, 10.5.7) after having joined Airport ... .
I had a problem like this getting web access on the guest network while on a recent visit to a client's HQ building .

Is it because they emulate some aspect of the ancient tribal life absent in urbanized america? to me it seems it has to do with the coffee shop being more than a food service. but how would you say what else it is?

I have never thought that an indie coffee shop has....
Of an impact on local coffee shops, since the typical customer of a coffee shop is different than that of SB, more eclectic, or more progressive environment.

They stock all types find time to pay Social Coffee....
Crema in RH, you should find time to pay Social Coffee a visit on West Beaver Creek.
They have a few locations in the east and west end .
Decent coffee, nice atmosphere and free wifi.
