A fellow gave me a huge collection of US coins.. From 1868 silver dollars to 5$ gold pieces, and hundreds and hundreds of silver and non silver coins.... 5 rolls of sliver quarters, 5 rolls of mercury dimes and lots of everything. Including proof sets...

If you really harmful and requires no rubbing ....
The problem with soapy water is that it will not remove the dirt without rubbing the coin.

Entirely new to the practice of "numismatics", and I'm kind of curious; if one was to want to get more into it, learn about interesting places/times to start, for relatively cheapish, where do you go? General sites/books, or is this "ancient" stuff more...

That coin still holds pride of place in the ancients part of my collection, despite the fact that I have a dealer asks what I collect, I want to answer, "Coins I like at prices I can afford." That does not help them sell ....

Only 1 book in my collection don't judge me catalogs -- used to trace coin pedigrees, of course! (So, coin related! ) The MacKenzie catalog from 1869 is the first coin....
