I am using Windows XP. I am tired of looking at the folder icons in Windows XP. I changed the color depth to 256 colors and the folder icons in Windows Explorer changed to the flat - windows 95/98 style icons. I loved them!

The reason for this....
This works at any color depth icons.
If you do go with the third-party route, the Windows and Buttons pull down includes Windows Classic Style .
Or manually create an icon package from the Windows icons.

I believe it has something to do with the alpha channel of the image but I need to find out how to do that in photoshop or gimp.

Tell the NSImage instance for the icon that it should be a template image.
If I understand correctly, what you want is an option in Photoshop called "Color Desaturation".
