I have a Dell U2711 wide-gamut monitor that can run with an AdobeRGB profile, as well as sRGB. Using my Spyder 3, I have calibrated the monitor in both sRGB and AdobeRGB modes.
I have always soft-proofed in Photoshop in sRGB because I didn't own this ...

If by brighter you mean more intense, you can just multiply each R,G,B value by the same by 1.2 .
Example:
Starting with colour: #224466 space gamut.
Finish by converting each byte back to hex.
Arbitrary number.

A note for all up-loaders
I am seeing a lot more images being uploaded using the Adobe RGB color space. Please be aware that most browsers will render an image in the sRGB color space. So what happens when you upload an image using the Adobe RGB color...

Colours are all wrong
why when I get images printed by Digilabs the reds seem to be completely different to what I see on my screen.

A good party to print for me...? sound like they use a different colour space to you, what do you use, I use srgb hmmm...
The test and I'm not colour blind (think I remember that from biology lesson many years ago!).
