I've been using the AEBS with my PowerBook for the last two and a half years with no problems. I was able to set it up to work with my Verizon DSL internet service pretty easily and never gave it a second thought...

The closest you can get to your own cable box is a Tivo or computer tuner with CableCard.
Is it possible to buy a Comcast cable box and not have a monthly fee? NO.
