I am going to buy a 1911 pistol in the near future, but I am undecided on the size I will get. The use: will be kept at home mostly, in my vehicle, and / or carry. I do realize that the commander would be a whole lot easier to carry than a full size, ...

I carry a full size, and even though the extra going Commander size as well but when push came to shove, a Government model just felt better to me of the Government model....
If for carry, I'd get the Commander.
The differences.

RIA....
($700 +/-) Sig, Kimber, Smith, Rock Island, Colt...
Not bad for the money.
Commander barrel with officer grip.
From a new at Sig's C3.
Guns (C3, RCS, Compact models) and commander size guns (Carry model) I would vote Colt here.

For DW you can do better on pricing is not an option, why not go with... .
Price is around $650 or so.
For DW you can do better on pricing, which is commander size as well.

Is commander size as well.

Going to pick up a 4" 1911. Need to decide on a manufacturer. I'm only considering these four manufacturers.

Not much to choose....
You can find the discontinued C-bob flawless and accurate.
To be pedantic (because that's what I do), a 4-inch 1911 is NOT a "Commander-size" pistol which is a commander slide on a officer frame; great for CCW.

Kimber calls that a "Compact." The full size grip with the 4" is what they call the "Pro." Thanks.

Ok guys I have a Colt 1991A1 full size 5" barrel, 45 ACP, and I was thinking of a future purchase of just the Commander slide, complete upper, for concealed carry purposes. So here is the $64,000 question, Will it work??

However there is an extra cut in the commander....
The commander and full size have the same size frame.
That will take both full size and commander slides (see pic below) but the standard Colt 1911 frame won’t do.

They have many options for that price ....
3rd Recommendation would be a Sig...
I have one and love it.
If you can find one, I would also recommend the Ruger SR1911 .
Great 1911 for that exact price range, and brand new .
Look for a new STI Spartan V or IV.
