Can someone tell me what's behind the hdX and sdX naming convention for hard disks under Linux? I understand it's a "convention" but what does that mean? Does that mean, for example, that a SCSI drive must be called sdX or it won't work?

Prior to installing Centos I had Scientific linux dual booting with Windows XP. Whilst installing Centos I was offered a boot menu consisting of Centos and "other". I changed "other" to Windowx XP and added SL as a 3rd item.

To boot another Linux (in your case Scientific Linux) through chainloader, you need to install MBR from the same sources so there are very minimal differences in capabilities.
