The xbox360 supports 1080p over component for games.
This link provides the official graph of which resolution is supported for which cable type.
Component can only handle a maximum of 1080i, while HDMI can handle 1080p.

You just need the hdmi cable.
It gives better picture quality compared to component cables the necessary cables come with the xbox 360 / ps3 itself .
You only need HDMI cable.

Well that explains it.
Basic answer - If you're talking about using the cable to plug into the RCA connectors on the rear on the front display.

A component cable will force the HD content to 480i.
