Ya the bestbuy guy is wrong if your tv supports 1080i then component.
It's 1080p that component won't do on the PS3 (it'll do it on the 360, but only with some models of TV).
Component can do 1080i.

You must need to select in NTSC the settings....
If it is still black and white after you have tuned it, please return it .
Also your yellow connector might be loose or something.
You either need to tune your TV or your colour picture thingy in your TV is broken .
