If we know the approximate C:N ratio of the materials we use in our compost, we can combine them so of the materials we use in our compost, we can combine them so that the total mix will be close to 30, that's for people ....
As I grow a lot in pots I was looking at ways of reducing my annual compost spend so I was condidering making my own. Now I know that most people use home made compost as top dressing on their beds but I havent really read of anyone using it in containers...

Your own compostAs it seems most comercial compost....
I use containers in my greenhouse and use my own home made compost by soaking dangling a stocking full in a tub of water and using immediately.

MW I have had....
On the compost heap, anything vegatitive though.
Even wilted lettuce.
We DO NOT use any meat waste.
Thats an excellent site! :) We here at the assembly use just about all vegetable, fruit waste.

Is this a real risk, and is there anything in particular I can do in the compost.

The more you fiddle around with your compost pile by turning it....
When your compost is ready to use it can be used in two from newspapers and dont use magazines.
And dig them over, removing all weeds as you go.
I am putting in a section of a border of lilies. It was quite full of grass, violets & creeping charlie. Today I ran my tiller through it several times to work the area up. I suspect the grass & especially the violets & creeping charlie will come back...

Newspaper will blow around unless well mulched and I find the tough weeds will grow through....
Weeds with spreading roots should term weed eradication method.
Otherwise just bag up and garbage but I try to compost everything.
