An environment for conscious life, except by the same means as the universe has? Given they have of nothingness, i'd contest that consciousness is a thing in itself and preceded the universe.

It may dissipate into the universe but remain somehow entangled in some kind of functional unit, maybe in with NDEs where the experiencer....
