The Liberal - Conservative dichotomy is a modern invention. Both "liberals" and conservatives draw their policies primarily from classical liberalism. There was nothing contradictory about the phrase Liberal-Conservative in MacDonald's time, and there isn't now, if we are talking about classical liberalism. source
