It depends completely on the purpose of the DB but I find the first step is NORMALIZATION the database always runs fast First normal form In day-to-day practice, and ignoring the issue of whether... .
It depends on the person, but for me 3rd normal form does .
Organism I always wonder how we can form a picture of an ecosystem from fossil records? All a fossil can tell us is that the animal lived in a certain age... but it cannot tell us what else lived (unless we see bite marks or find prey in its gut or something...

I was, perhaps, hoping that two records would be treated as unique if ALL the constituent fields were with their first names and addresses....
If other fields are included then the definition of Unique Record can be a bit confusing.
