I'm using Windows Mail (which uses the windows contact store behind the scenes) to connect to the gmail imap server. I would like to have my gmail contacts available to me when using Mail.

You refer address book bi-directionally sync....
You could just set up an imap Gmail account in Windows Mail, but there's no (official) tool to sync the changes you make locally back to Gmail.
Account, there is no active bidirectional sync.

Hi
I have thunderbird 3.0 with the Zindus plugin. However it seems that Zindus syncs one way.
For example I type a new email address into thunderbird and then go to my gmail account and it has no record of this contact.
So is there a plugin or some setting...

I'd recommend the Google Contacts add-on for Thunderbird

I use Google Apps with my own domain. But I also have a regular Google account because many Google services are not available inside Google Apps (stuff like Picasa, Maps, Reader, Groups, Wave, and so on). Google uses an email address as login information...

A Google query reveals that there are workarounds for a calendar sync with Lotus Notes , but the contacts nut isn't cracked yet.
It seems Google itself hasn't implemented sync for Lotus Notes (yet).

Does anyone know how to sync contacts in Outlook with Windows Live contacts? I’ve got Outlook Connector but all that does is makes Live contacts visible in Outlook and doesn’t actually sync them.

You can then sync between Outlook and Soocial as well as between Soocial and Windows Live.
Another option is to use soocial.com.
Be able to move your contacts over to Windows Live contacts and sync them immediately.

When I'm in an area with unreliable AT&T cell data reception (e.g. all of Manhattan during the day), my contact list sometimes disappears, and does not reappear for an extended period of time, sometimes hours.

This could be a problem for you if a manual sync also makes your contacts disappear, but is probably worth the changes to Google Server....
To trigger a manual sync you just open up the appropriate app (contacts, mail or calendar).

Unlike the Sync Contacts option via iTunes, Google Sync allows you to sync your contacts wirelessly.
My recommendation is to use Google Sync, which uses Exchange ActiveSync.

I accidentally synced all Google contacts with email address to my iphone. Now my iphone contact listed is huge, with almost 3000 contacts. Sifting through them is a pain.

If you have a huge contact....
You can sync you google contacts with your mac, then look for duplicates and it will give you Cards".
You can however add the email to a contact with a phone number for duplicates.
Not that i know of.
