I know that the Core i7's are Quad Core and Hyper-threaded (so 4 cores, and 8 logical), and the Core i5's are Quad Core as well but not Hyper-threaded, does this really make a difference? Or are the only people who are going...

If you look at the reviews like this one on Tom's Hardware you'll see that the Core i5 is not a bottom feeder.
CPUs, hence the Core i5 to replace the aging C2D.

I was thinking of getting a core i5, because its a lot cheaper than the i7 range, and I've been told it can overclock very nicely.
Now I don't intend to push the overclocking to the very extreme but it would be nice to get an extra 0.5 GHz out of it. ...

The newer PC games and stuff like future pinball and visual pinball youd probably want a core i7 with dedicated video card but for emulators....
It runs fine.
I have emulators running off my Toshiba i5 laptop with 4gb ram.
Might be sluggy with i3.

Quite a bit cheaper than an i5, but i5 only noticed some success on the more....
My buddy got this w/ 8gigs ram for 153 total .
If you have a microcenter near, they have a 4 core amd 960black edition 3.0ghz w/ gigabyte board for 109.00.

Well there isn't a huge different between the core i3 and i5, But I'd go for the core i5.
