How long a wait to get into your repair guy?
Just called to make an appt to have the repair guy I use look at a guitar. Last week of February is the soonest - so about 2 and a half months just before I can take it in. The quality of the work is great and I don't mind waiting, but was curious how long other people need to wait - if at all.

What tools are absolutely needed for repair?
In preparation for "The Challenge", I searched the Bay with pretty good results. Got a cheapo 16 piece kit with screwdrivers and a few other odds and ends. Then followed that up with a 4 dollar hand puller, and another 4 dollar hand setter kit.
I think the only thing I'm really missing in all this is a crystal press, but that's way out of my range from the looks of things. The rest of it only set me back about 20 bucks though.

Repair Cracked Ribs?
From all I've seen, steaming is much more common than boiling, and unless you way over-steam the wood I don't think you need to worrry about damaging the wood. Keeping enough water at a boil to boil a rib takes a lot of heat and water and a BIG container that can take the heat of having water boiled in it, so a steaming setup is also generally easier to engineer too.
