The drug wars and high crime rates in middle America is that putting you off from going there as a tourist? I just wonder how much danger there would be to your person if you were to visit some of the cultural sites and some of the major cities?

If there's a place where I don't think I would feel safe, I probably wouldn't go is worth risking my life .
Not involved in drugs or crime and I tend to take normal precautions while traveling, I wouldn't in the area these days.

Are you looking for proximity to a metropolitan area? Proximity to recreation! What are you looking for? The western end of NY in the area still full of farm communities is very as well as a low crime rate.
And inexpensive.

Ad far as "safe" neighborhoods, I would say to locate a neighborhood where you can get what you want for the money, and then check with the local precinct on crime stats.
