To give you an idea, this pumpkin candy bowl was made with half double stitches these are.
Is too far spaced to be single crochet (US terms), might be half double or double.
Have been made with rows across the length.

Have you looked on ravelry for a crochet or knit pumpkin outfit pattern? That would be your easier help! I was just thinking if its a boy and you want to knit or crochet it, you can make orange pants and a vest with a pumpkin....
