Why? If you have a Forwarder entered into the Forwarders List the Root
Hints are not used
configuration, which exsits....
If you don't have a Forewarder Listed then you *must*
have the Root Hints Servers or the DNS...

However, DNSmasq is a great lightweight DNS app that you actually might have some now without any problem.
Is quite possible, for BIND this would mean that you clear out the root hints and configure forwards you could find.

Our ISP's DNS servers are unreliable at times. I am looking for reliable, public DNS servers as replacement.
I know OpenDNS but do not like the fact that it hijacks Google lookups and proxies its services.
Preferably the DNS servers are free, reliable...

I'd recommend running your own DNS server on your LAN, using "root hints" to provideThis is not exact answer to your question, but I have setup my own dns server (BIND) on laptop.

Do you guys perfer to host your own DNS or have your isp do this? I have my ISP doing this but there are limitations on adding records and I am thinking to running my own DNS. Are ther alternatives which I can look into?

MaybeI'd recommend OpenDNS
Some routers can be configured to point DNS requests to OpenDNS.
Once a month, a cron job interrogates the root servers and refreshes the hints table.

I inherited an evironment that has a BIND server for our internal LAN. I noticed it doesn't have any forwarders for external request (i.e. google.com). How the heck does my laptop know that google.com is outside our LAN? My DHCP scope has the BIND server...
