Head First SQL is also pretty good if you're just starting out, but it's more about SQL than database design, per se reading Refactoring Databases although....
Database Design for Mere Mortals is probably the best book on the subject.
Can you recommend me books that you like the most in database design and optimization? Edit: General design and optimization books (database-independent, no matter it's Oracle, SQL Server or DB2,...) are great. But database-specific books are still great...

The book documented a design for a "Semantic Database" with Object Oriented properties book.
The best platform agnostic book I have found is Database Design for Mere Mortals by Michael J of its time.

There are some good ones that can help.
I'd say, Database Design for Mere Mortals , personally :) I'd say there is no one book I'd recommend as THE design book.
