I've been considering migrating my laptop from Ubuntu to Debian. I didn't set up a separate home partition. Is it as easy as just installing Debian over Ubuntu?

Debian has syslog sending a MARK to the logfile.
First, try enabling laptop mode in /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode , this will have step in getting the system to not write out to disk.
Often it does spin up.
