I've been considering migrating my laptop from Ubuntu to Debian. I didn't set up a separate home partition. Is it as easy as just installing Debian over Ubuntu?

My worst fear is Debian sacrificing stability for polish. The UI/usability philosophy behind Gnome 3 bothers me but there are other DE/WM options. Besides, Gnome is not Debian.
