I do not believe the fact that it is a Dell Mini9 should matter, assuming it is a standard parameters with
synclient -l
I use Ubuntu 9.04, but I think in Ubuntu 8.04 you may have to add.

The difference is that VirtualBox allows you to run & use Windows while still in Ubuntu.
Do you want to be able to run Windows 7 and Ubuntu? You can install Windows in Ubuntu using boot.
