HELP with identification of Detroit Diesel I'm helping a friend resurrect an old DROTT Excavator that I think has the Detroit Diesel 6V53 natural.
can anyone tell me where the serial numbers are located on DD motors?

The 71 series used ....
The other thing to identify is the model series, the 53 series used a valve cover that's held on by four machine screws (usually phillips head) at the lip where valve cover meets engine head .
The 6V is easy and obvious to identify.

Frankly, considering it's a Diesel, I'd be more interested in the torque curve.
Low end torque - particularly compared to Detroit Diesel's counterparts from Cummins and Caterpillar the HP.

What engine oil does a Detroit 2 stroke diesel engine take? Recently we have brought a new boat with two 1979 2 stroke diesel Detroit engines but we have looked online and are unable to find out what engine oil it takes. Please help? Many thanks,x

Here is a Detroit Diesel 8V-53 as installed in a 1968 Chris Craft (Roamer). Today the 8V-53 seems to be somewhat rare, although the same parts from other 53 series motors will fit this one too. The 8V-series apparently built more in the 71 cubic inch ...
