I'm wondering why there have to be so many regular expression dialects. Why does it seem like so many languages, rather then reusing a tried and true dialect, seem bent on writing their own.

That's why nearly every dialect uses X+ to mean "one or many come up with similar ideas....
Things like capturing groups, common variations of regular expressions.
Is an extension or syntactic sugar, and so has no source for standardization .

DBMS Vendors use SQL dialect features to differentiate their product, at the same time claiming to support SQL standards. 'Nuff said on this.
Is there any example of SQL you have coded that can't be translated to SQL:2008 standard SQL ?

SQL Server is on SQL 1999 standard, so some of the things that look like differnt semantics (for example Oracle handles NULLs differently from other SQL dialects in some cases like string operations....

If you can preprocess the stream the XSD is coming in on, then you could create a parser which understands the basic... .
There's not going to be a lot you can do about it .
Since a bug is already filed, I'd recommend you try a different XML Schema processor .

My personal feeling is that learning any Chinese dialect (Taiwanese, Cantonese, Shanghainese) is a waste of time since virtually any dialect speaker knows Mandarin anyway (and if he doesn't he is probably so uneducated that talking to him would be a nuisance...
