dice a couple of carrots and put in pot with the onions and 1lb mince and some gravy granules and then water both cheese and onions on top of....
And enjoy with friends or scoff the lot yourself and may god have mercy on your rectum .

The way to get real flavour in those dishes is to use lamb with a bit of fat to enrich the sauce .
Unless there is some fat in the meat it will go a bit tough and will be a waste of nice lamb .
I'd avoid the hotpot and the tagine if I were you .

Pam - just a note - I had a hard time finding wheat berries in SA, but I found them - surprisingly - at an Indian grocery .

Why do you need to differentiate them?
Just plant each tray/pot load in a separate row.
As they grow, the onions will develop tubular hollow leafs whilst the
leeks will develop flat leaves...
