I have an HTML table, with a link in the first column. I want to allow the user to click on anywhere in the row to activate that link. At the same time I would like to preserve the middle click and ctrl+click functionality of opening a new tab/window....

But there is no real way to know what thats contains the href attribute.
You could grab the event and look at it's event code.

So a method I often use to create nice SEO links that use images is the text-indent: -9999px; trick. Basically, I create a block-level anchor with a background image. I set its text-indent to a large negative number so you don't see it and that's good...
