Disability Compensation

Speak to your local council about who deals with ' hard to reach ' groups when carrying out consultations - they should have a framework in place as AFAIK this is a national requirement. You may need to chase around quite a bit, my experience with our council is many departments just want to tick boxes, but don't give up as there will be someone who wants to help! Often plans and consultation documents are available online, are you sure these aren't? If you don't get any joy via the ' hard to reach ' route, contact all your local councillors and MP and ask for a home visit due to your mobility issues. I would do as much of this in writing as possible, perhaps e-mail then follow up with recorded delivery letters if you can get someone to post them for you. A paper trail is helpful to prove what efforts you made to get your voice heard. source

Just curious because maybe TMJ victims could get compensation of disability money for having to live with this in their lives for a long amount of time in most cases. It does limit the things we could do if you think about it. Sometimes we can't even do certain physical things, like we are better off getting a job where we could sit around all day, don't you think? source

Is the fact that I am physically unable to do what I used to considered a disability? I am severely restricted as far as what my doctor says I can do, but can actually do some type of meaningful work. If you can't do plumbing construction anymore then you are disabled from the standpoint that career path is now closed. However, disability generally doesn't mean never train for another career again. You say you are "severely restricted" as to what you can do. Have you discussed these limitations with your vocational counselor and tried to find another line of work to train for? The best example I have is a patient we once had who was a construction worker diagnosed wit epilepsy. He wanted permanent disability at the age of 27 since he couldn't do construction anymore. The doctor gave it to him for six months in order to have some income coming in while he trained to do something else. I believe he went back to school for computer programming. If you are even remotely able to work you are more likely to earn a better salary doing that than collecting disability checks. Only relying on that will lower you to a new standard of poverty like you have never seen. source

I carried my own Health Insurance for many years as a freelance broadcast technician. Thank God I married someone with a "real" job since we now have coverage through her employer. The Union to which I belong offers benefits as well as a Flex Spending account which is designed to help offset the cost of having your own insurance but now serves as a reimbursement pot for medical expenses like prescriptions, etc. This is about the only good thing that's ever come out of membership in the IBEW. source
