My wife has been complaining about her MacBook Air's performance. It seems to work fine, but when I ran Disk Utility and did a "Verify Disk", it reported filesystem errors. The "Repair Disk" button was disabled, because this is the startup drive.

My Linux system has started throwing SMART errors in the syslog. I tracked it down and believe the problem is a single block on the disk. How do I go about easily getting the disk to reallocate that one block? I'd like to know what file got destroyed ...

Using apples disk utility I tried repairing my disk permissions on my macbook. After doing a repair which was said to take 38 minutes but almost took over two hours i decided to click repair again to see what would happen. And unthinkably it had to repair...

There are several disk manufacturers, some much more established than others, and you do not always know what make of disk is in an external enclosure.
To condemn all 1TB disks is wrong.
