I currently can watch 'most' DVDs on my Ubuntu (9.10) laptop. But I recently tried to let my 2 year old watch Disney Pixar's Cars (and a couple other from the same family) and the players wouldn't play them (tried Movie Player, VLC). My assumption is ...

Ubuntu's help has a good page on playing dvd's in restricted formats & what to do ... .
What do you see if you try to play the video from the command line? The reason for not playing the dvd should printout to the terminal .
I would guess codec and not DRM.
