I'd like to register a private domain name so that my name and address are not revealed to anyone who does a whois lookup.
But something I can't find is whether it's possible to hide the registration date - the date when I registered the domain.

Hiding the created, last updated whois, e.g.
Registration and registration expiration date cannot be hidden in any way.
However, usually this is quite acceptable practice.
You sometime in trouble.

I'm renewing my domains. I've always purchased private registration but I'm having second thoughts. Is it really doing anything?

The registration to you or extract compensation for an up-front fee and then you'd never hear from them again, the problem is finding which once.
