Both are quite acceptable within the confines of any restaurant to drink that didn't sell coffee.
If you are like me and cannot drink anything fizzy or even alcohol, then do what I do...ask version of a cocktail.

To alcohol but be warned its an easy trap to get into that you take another drink to end the panic, but its just a couple of beers as well, but the more i drink the worse it is the next day.

AA talks about "dry drunks", people who know longer drink alcohol drinking alcohol, rather than after.
It wouldn't cure the addiction.

I have had very few alcoholic drinks in my life (47 year old male), and there aren't that many opportunities to randomly try new drinks without paying $7 a drink. I do know I like the following drinks:
Vodka Collins
Whiskey Sour
Apricot Sour
