The best is to always use the original WHQL driver supplied by the Manufacturer.
The version of the driver bundled with Vista is from NVidia, however is normal a release or 2 behind the official WHQL driver supplied by NVidia.

What I did was install the standard VGA driver, rebooted, then re-installed the driver I needed.
I had a similar issue recently with a video driver.

You should be able to find it through to Device Manager .
If you have a Dell then Dell do a driver update package that will check all the Dell drivers and update them to the latest versions.
There is no generic method.

I definitely recommend the driver update, when you click the "Download" or "Install Updates" button you should get a box pop or....
And then doing a manual update through IE where you can choose to de-select the driver.

That's not to say you wouldn't benefit from getting a new driver if available are usually installed quickly my windows update, only problem might be the printers because, (external for the CD or go to the site....

It can update drivers and other apps!
update notifier is one of my favorite FREEWARE, however DriverChecker is also a good one.
Try using Secunia PSI.
