Hey there. I'm looking into getting a pair of overheads. I'll be using a CAD kick mic from that package they make on the kick, and an sm57 on the snare.
What's the best I could do for under 175

I slightly prefer Audio Technica....
People seems to liking those 12 Gauge mics for overheads..Price is right.
Michael Joly, Samson, Behringer, etc.
Though I prefer LDC on overheads the Oktava MK-012 are really great as overhead mics.

Alrighty,
i just got a pair of Coles 4040 and would like to hear from others who have gotten good results with figure-8 ribbons as drum overheads and room mics.
i have very little experience with ribbon mics to date, these are my first actually.
i mainly...

Figure-8s are quite useful looking for as a drum....
DPA 4006s, too! The Coles just don't seem to have the detail I'm looking for as a drum overhead.
I much prefer the AEAs or Royers in that spot .
For them on drum overheads.

Hey I recently purchased a FireStudio Project to mic up a whole drum kit and i was wondering what overheads you would suggest that are cheap and would work well in a untreated room. Its in a basement with 8 foot ceilings (exposed Ibeams) carpet on the...

If your cymbals are too loud, back them off.
And will do the job for drum overheads.

I know this might seem redundant, but I can't find an answer on this. I am looking at Earthworks mics as overheads.
My room is untreated, about 26' x 24'. 9' ceilings. I do have some carpet on some of the walls, and that has seemed to deaden it a bit....

The best, biggest drum sounds....
Improve the room first, then worry.
Quote of my unfinished basement and would kill for a drum room that size.

Hi. I want to try ribbon mics as overheads, to tame the hihats and cymbal sizzle. I have low ceilings, so Beyer M160 is the obvious choice.
I listened to some clips in ZenProAudio clipalator, in vocals the M160 mellows hi end, but as drum overhead, everything...

You may have to rethink the viability of getting certain kinds of drum sounds in your room.
Mics as you can, and mixing overheads very low, if not avoiding them altogether.

Hey guys,
I'm ordering some new misc gear, Apollo a few mic cases and rack cases, and I've got some extra dough laying around and I'd really like to invest in a good solid set of overheads. At one point I had a pair of Mojave MA201-Fet's which I absolutely...

They also work well for me, @ 700.00.
overhead microphone mixed with an RE20 bass drum microphone and an Audix I5 for the snares batter head on overheads, they give a nice full drum sound and silky airy cymbals.

Wanted to start messing around with ribbons on overheads, but was looking for a story or two on the potential pitfalls of the approach.
#1 Will the ceiling height cause reflection problems for the figure 8 pattern?
#2 With the tightened polar pattern ...

I like having to add top end to overheads rather than reducing ribbon, BTW).
I like ribbons for overheads, because they usually take high-end EQ well.
Mics aimed at the snare/hats kept the center image strong .

I know it's often thought that overheads aren't needed on small stages due to spill in (especially compressed) vocal mics, but I wonder if this is a product of laziness rather that best practise?
Next gig I'm planning on close micing cymbals as much as...

Maybe a "sprinkle" of the stereo overheads
maybe a bit of toms is for a "drum sound" not a cymbal overhead at all..
Sound from kick/sn and that overhead.
