Can ear infections heal on their own? Is it possible for an ear infection, if not too severe, I guess, to heal on its own? What are some ways to help cope with the pain without antibiotics? Does Advil help?

My son has had a lot of ear infections. The doctor checks him and often, but not always, gives him an antibiotic to get rid of it. At what age should I be asking my doctor to see whether tubes in the ear might be needed? I don't want my son to miss out...
