A reply to my last post talked of yeast eating sugar and inferred the more sugar there is, the more active the yeast is. I thought yeast cells need nutrients, the right temperature range, the right degree of oxygenation - and then they grow and divide...

Does yeast work differently in high altitudes? I know baking is different, have to add more water and flour then what most recipes call for, and pasta takes forever to cook! But I haven't used yeast yet. Anyone know?

What does it mean when yeast is "active"? I read instructions on how to "proof" yeast but I don't understand what it means when the yeast is "active". Is it growing, eating the sugar, or what?

Has anyone else been getting multiple yeast infections? This is crazy and a major PITA! The doc said if the OTC medicine does not get rid of it, she would give me a prescription. I have been trying to eat more yogurt, but it still comes back. I am thinking...

I suspected my yeast was not viable and, after well over 24 hours in the starter, there's nothing to report. No krausen, no CO2 and no slurry yeast band.
Can I simply throw in a new batch of yeast into the very same starter? I hear that yeasts are cannibals...

When you pitched the yeast, and what strain? Yeast from a vial/pack? Are you culturing? The few times I've cultured from small amounts, like a bottle, it took longer than 24 hours.
