Well, actually, rickenbacker made an electric upright in the mid to late 30's iirc. it was fretless, to the best of my knowledge, and was connected to a small amplifier which doubled as a stand.

Acoustic bass strings will increase the volume and a
fretted bass will have more volume than a fretless as an instrument to play
unamplified.
