I need to transfer data from the serial port to ethernet port . How can it be done ? Using software + hardware or only hardware will do ? If so what is the way i can move abt in and if it can be done using software is it possible using C ....

It may be easier to assign static IP addresses to the 2 ethernet ports, or make laptop 1 a DHCP.
Configure laptop 1 as a router.

So if you had two switches on two different networks, you could hook up one port to each switch.
Ethernet is a broadcast medium, so even if you could do this, both ports can't machine.

If a user or a visitor sees a port, they will try to stick something into it and then complain to us when it doesn't work or breaks their stuff. Are there such things as physical locks that can be put into ports so they can't use them?

My lab has a PS3 running Ubuntu Linux 9.04 Server Edition. After a period of a few hours with no use, the Ethernet connection (eth0) seems to go to sleep, causing the connection to be lost. Pinging or trying to SSH into the machine results in no response...
