To answer your first question:
I would have thought 2.5" driver enclosures would be reliable.
As 2.5" drives are usually designed for laptops they should.
Then you should be OK carrying it around.

I don't really like the WD because I prefer to just manually move my files to it and don't like how the hard drive is set up....

The 2.5 inch external is what I use to carry video files, audiobooks, etc for my laptop.
Additionally, we've had a Toshiba 2.5 inch external at work for 3 or 4 years.
Years with no issues.

I pulled apart a 500GB WD Elements drive today.
This is the 2.5" version.
Interesting to note that the USB interface is now part of the IDE circuit board on these drives.
This may not be news to some of you, but I was expecting a standard 2.5" SATA drive...
