I have an external hard drive (Lacie big disc extreme). The power supply melted and my warranty is void. I need the data on this disc but do not want to fork over the $50 to replace the power supply right now.
I have opened the case and found two 500GB...

I've done this on a WD 2TB MyBook drive (2x 1TB):
1) Plug the drives into yourRAID 0 is data stripped across both drives.

I'm seriously considering keeping all my files only on external hard drives.
My main computer is a laptop, and currently I back up the files on it to multiple external hard drives. I'm thinking of changing that, and keeping the files only on external ...

Standard internal drives expect some ventilation, while external enclosures often seal the drive in with no forced ventilation.

I love the fact that you can now buy 1 and 2 TB drives cheap. However that much data on a single drive scares me. What would be the best way to build a raid system out of external drives? I am looking for advice on performance, price, and ease of data...

But at least I feel a little safer than with single drives.

Hi everyone
I am looking for an affordable and simple online backup solution for our server's data. It is a simple file server running windows 7, however all of the data is on an external usb Drobo.
I was hoping to use the Carbonite backup solution, but...

Mozy.com Home version had the same external drive limitation.
They note that they do.
I have not used it, but Backblaze seems to support External USB drives.

I'm running Vista Prof 32bit on a lenovo w500 thinkpad. I have four external drives and use 4 different PCs, that all have system volume information folders, taking up lots of space, and I can't delete them.
I don't even know which computer's files are...

I'm looking at buying some more space. I currently have 6 hard drives ranging from 80GB - 500GB glued together in an LVM. I just use them for long term storage (ISOs of CDs I don't want to bother with, Movies, Photos, etc.).
I'm looking at expanding. ...

Most external drives I've seen get really hot even if you just keep them running idly for some external hdds.
Be careful with the external drives, the quality.
Cooling affects hard drive reliability a lot .

How does the performance of an external SSD drive compare to an internal?
I'm assuming the connection would be USB 2.0 - would that be the limiting factor in speed? Is it a waste of money?

An external drive using USB is always going to be a slower at improving speeds from an internal HDD then an external USB2 SSD drive is not the way to go.

This question is similar, but kind of the opposite of what I want. I want external USB drives to be mounted automatically at boot, without anyone logged in, to locations like /media/<label> .

You might want to try out Pysdm
If you only have one drive mounted at a time, you can simply edit one drive, you can still do this with:
/dev/sdb1 /mnt/usbdrive1 ext3 defaults 0 0 /dev/sdc1 to other systems as well.

This sounds like a problem with Windows XP.

EDIT: Note, Drobo is SATA only....
No need to grab a screwdriver to open the external case, mess with power and SATA/IDE cables, etc to set up.
The ThermalTake BlacX , and other similar products, are very handy for temporarily mounting drives.
