If you want to run Windows....
It depends.
The cost/gig is also higher.
The problem is transfer speed over USB is way slower than SATA or PATA internal .
You would have to set boot from USB device and then hook up the device .
Yes, but it will be very slow.

On the other hand, if you find a Firewire 800 box, you could always connect it to your PC with a FW400-FW800 cable .
Is to find a Firewire 400 SataII HD case, without external power supply.

It has a simple on-off switch on the back.
When I want to turn this thing off, do I simply just flip the switch? I...

If you're using Windows, just click on the system tray icon that looks like a USB flash disk and choose to eject the drive .
It's highly recommended that you first eject the drive.

Especially if you want to mirror some kind of special HDD.

I got the bright idea to upgrade to 7.4.2, and then I could not access my external drive at all.
I was running 7.3.1.

If there are many files on the disk, or the disk is large, this can take some time .
Usually, when disconnecting a drive without ejecting it, the drive's integrity is checked upon the next connection .

Do you know for sure that it's powered on? I say this because there are 2.5" external drives that don't require power, but your 1TB drive almost certainly does.
Is plugged in to an external power supply.
