One method is to mirror the live machines on temporary hot-swaps and, assuming access is via network, cut over by reconfiguring the router to divert traffic to the mirrors .

We are now using this setup in a production....
It's also open source, which is a big advantage, if you ask me .
The enyim.com memcached client API is great and easy to work with .
We are using the memcached port for Windows and we are very pleased with it .
