I am looking for the bare minimum packages that I need to install for a fedora Linux machine. I do not need the X Window System or anything else. The machine will be used as a server and managed remotely using SSH.

You can find out what default software comes with Fedora here .
Fedora comes with Firefox by default.
Fedora will boot up from Live CD or Live USB on an empty hard drive (I'm assuming you mean the primary hard drive).

That caused the error message I told you above....
I experienced some trouble since Fedora did not like the partition tables created by MacOS X.
I was able to get the disc out of the drive and boot Fedora live.
I fortunately got it running.
