Feel About Your Culture

We had a big media thing a couple of years back with the media sensationalizing teenage binge drinking. It was pretty much a matter of parents becoming terrified that their offspring drank as much as they did. source

Lacey was rude to make such a big deal out of it. I see nothing wrong with using a practice from another culture if it does what needs to be done or helps a person feel better. It's like yoga - it's not rude to do the stretches and exercises that are part of yoga without subscribing to the philosophy behind yoga. source

This is really a sociological question and I'm looking for a lot of input. Is there a distinctive culture of jazz today of the sort that was evoked in the film Round Midnight, or perhaps in novels with a jazz setting such as John Clellon Holmes, The Horn? Or perhaps a new distinctive jazz culture different from that of the 20s, the swing era or the bebop era? My hunch is that this is much less the case with the decline of venues and the decling influence of the AFM and the fewer opportunities for professional jazz musicians, the increased orientation of musicians toward educational institutions, studio work, etc. But I'd really like to get other people's take on this. source

I'm from the Philippines and over there they keep the dead body in the house for a whole week. People from all over the province come to your house and mourn for the dead. People you don't even know will even come over at times to pay their repect to the deceased. It's knda strange by American standards, and yes toward the end of the week the body does start to smell bad. source

The term in our office is "Self Loathing Freight". The reduction in business class travel may have something to do with it. source
