Why does you MIL think the current economic issues would play a part? Do you have sufficient income? Does the house appraise out? If your credit is good (720-740 is) and both of the previous questions are yes, then I'd say you should be fine .

The specialists seem to earn more on average than general dentists .
Some hard data can be found at the ADA web site where it lists earnings by specialty .

Specialists make far more than general pracs.
