We have FireSymfony that allows one to view the Symfony, PHP variables in a firebug panel , so I wonder whether there is a similar extension that allows me to view PHP variables for general PHP apps ( not just Symfony apps)?

It is an extension to FireBug that allows sort of an extended....
You may want to check out FirePHP.
In other words, it's not really possible for that to happen for ALL php applications .
For firebug or any other extension to debug.
I think every web developer loves Firefox's Firebug extension for solving CSS, Javascript or HTTP problems. I use it very often, but I'm sure that I'm not aware of some hidden gems. What is your favorite (not evident) trick or tip for Firebug?

Another nice firebug extension is FireSpider , which allows you to easily detect for Firebug....

For stuff that works in FF inspection and browsing than firebug in my opinion and much less powerful when it comes to javascript.
The Web Developer extension -- for DOM/CSS stuff, but usually related to JS.
