Mozilla Firefox 12.0 and Thunderbird 12.0 have been pushed out and I updated to both yesterday.
They are working very well so far.
No problems with any of the Extensions I use with Firefox 12.0 or Thunderbird 12.0, however Lightning 1.3 was updated to...

My Linux distribution has upgraded its Thunderbird client and since then, on my desktop, when I click on a link, it opens a new Firefox browser at its homepage rather than a new tab in the already opened browser at the clicked link in the email. Oddly...

It's not that though, the problem occurred after a Thunderbird upgrade and it's more than just the new browser opening, it opens it....
The Options page in my copy of Firefox has "open new windows in a new tab instead" checked under "Tabs".

If I drag an attachment out of Thunderbird onto the desktop and then double click it, it always opens in HexEdit which is almost certainly not what I want. I have to use right click -> open with on them.
If I can't make it open with the expected application...

Make sure you are running the latest version of Thunderbird, then, search on https are dragging the attachment out of Thunderbird, it may not be setting the properties of the drag item properly for setting the ....

I'm looking for a gnome applet that periodically would watch for thunderbirds mail accounts.
Something similar to gmail firefox plugin. Did anyone notice this kind of applet?

You can try using AllTray and dock Thunderbird in your system tray, then let Thunderbird's built in notification take care of it..
There are screenlets apps available, IIRC.
