But it's best to avoid saving stuff to the application folder...unless you meant Application Data folder .

I am running a Mac Mini with OS X 10.6.2 as a HTPC on a 42" 1080p TV
With Windows 7 it was trivial to make everything easier to read from the couch (icons, web browser, explorer etc). Is there a simple way to achieve the same goal on OS X?

I've installed an OpenType font on my development machine expecting to then be able to choose that font for a label on a form.
The font is available in MS Word so I'm reasonably confident it was installed ok, but I can't see the font in the font-picker...

That already, is the font listed in c:\windows\fonts\ okay? If it is, you might want to try removing it and then re-installing that font via the File > Install New Font...

When I log in with putty , I always have to:

There is already a question , by the way.
Then go back to the session and save it.
Do the same under Appearance for the font and size.
You need to go "Change Settings -> Window" and set it there.
